Many of the older people we work with find it hard to maintain their gardens.

Our wonderful Garden SOS volunteers help the older people we work with to enjoy their gardens, promoting independence and wellbeing. This is on an as-needed basis and at a time and location convenient to you.

Roles could involve:
  • tidying up, deadheading and weeding
  • cutting the lawn or trimming hedges
  • planting seeds or bulbs

We do not ask volunteers to undertake heavy labour or major landscaping work, nor to bring their own tools. The service user will normally provide the necessary equipment for each gardening job. Staff will co-ordinate the role for you, all you have to do is let us know when you're entering and leaving the garden.

"I enjoy my gardening work with Link Age Southwark, gaining experience and confidence and I enjoy meeting people"

This role requires:
  • a cheerful and friendly personality
  • good communication / listening skills
  • the fitness to undertake 60-90 minutes of gardening work
  • attendance at a volunteer induction and other relevant training opportunities
  • completion of a full Disclosure Barring Service and character reference check
  • a commitment to working within the policies of Link Age Southwark, in particular health & safety, confidentiality, safeguarding and equality & diversity

We cover all reasonable expenses and we are happy to provide references for volunteers who have completed 6 months of volunteering with us.
