Group Support

We run a mixture of social, exercise and activity groups for older people across the borough of Southwark. From singing to yoga, bridge to computer groups, we have something to suit everyone.

Many of our groups are run by professional tutors and our wonderful volunteers who help to set up, welcome group members, serve tea and coffee and tidy up at the end. We are always looking for new faces to join our groups.

If you have a skill or talent that you would like to share with the group, whether it be arts & crafts, singing, dancing, knowledge of local history or anything in between, we'd love to hear from you!

The role could involve:

Leading activities
Setting up and clearing away activities
Ensuring that appropriate refreshments are available and served and cleared away
Socialising with group members
Assisting in completing basic admin tasks to ensure that attendance records are kept
Assisting in publicising activities within the venue and local community to attract more participants

The role requires:

a cheerful and friendly personality
good communication/listening skills
good physical health
commitment to supporting a group on either a weekly or fortnightly basis, dependent on the group
good timekeeping and reliability
able to work independently
attendance at a volunteer induction and other relevant training opportunities
completion of a full Disclosure and Barring Service and character reference check
a commitment to working within the policies of Link Age Southwark, in particular health and safety, confidentiality, safeguarding and equality and diversity

We cover all reasonable expenses and we are happy to provide references for volunteers who have completed 6 months of volunteering with us.

Volunteer Befriender

Volunteer to visit an older person feeling lonely and isolated for 1 hour a week and make a new friend in your local community.
Telephone Buddies

As a volunteer telephone buddy, you will make regular calls to an older person. Your role will be to offer them a listening ear, to check on their general wellbeing and to engage with them in friendly conversation.
Young Fundraisers

If you're aged between 12 and 18, the Young Fundraisers Programme is a great way to help the local community, meet like-minded people and boost your CV!
Hospital Buddy

If you are an empathetic person who would like to provide support to an older person recovering from elective surgery, consider becoming a Hospital Buddy for up to six months.
Check-In Support

Being a Check-In Support volunteer involves contacting out volunteers and service users to talk about their role or how they are finding our services and having a general catch up on their wellbeing.
Garden SOS

If you're the practical type, we're on the lookout for volunteers who could lend a hand helping an older person in the garden.
Community Fundraiser

Join our friendly committee of volunteers raising vital funds for our services by organising and hosting events.
Neighbourhood Champion

Help us raise awareness of our work in the local community by connecting with local organisations and businesses.
Dementia Befriender

Volunteer to visit a person living with mild-moderate dementia for 1 hour, once a week and make a new friend in your community
Driver

Getting from A to B can be challenging for many older people. Our volunteer drivers help them to maintain active social lives.

My experience as a volunteer

I've always worked in the NHS, mostly in paediatrics, and when I retired I wanted to do something equally rewarding but different so when I found that Link Age Southwark (Dulwich Helpline as it was then) was looking for befrienders for the elderly I thought this sounded exactly what I was looking for.
